October 22, 2011 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2011: Night 4 House of Wax (2005)
Tonight I have a special effects extravaganza for you. The House of Wax (2005) remake usually doesn't get the benefit of the doubt, but it should. It stars Elisha Cuthbert who appeared in the Are You Afraid of the Dark TV series, both the original ending in 1996--although she only appeared in 1 episode--and the revival of the series starting in 1999
where she was a show regular. Chad Michael Murray plays Elisha's brother and is set to appear in the forthcoming The Haunting in Georgia (2011)--I'm really looking forward to this movie. Offhand, until I sit down to watch it, I couldn't tell you about Jon Abrahams' character or what happens to him. Jon had a brief but affective part in Wes Craven Presents: They (2002). Andy Anderson plays the Sheriff and can otherwise be seen in the 'Salem's Lot (2004) remake, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004), and an episode of the Stephen King short series Nightmares & Dreamscapes (2006).
Jared Padalecki, star of Supernatural (2005), is on hand for House of Wax as a regular Joe. Jared also starred in the Friday the 13th (2009) remake--more on that on Night 12 on October 30. One of the draws to this movie is Paris Hilton who even promoted the movie by signalling, with T-shirts, that she would die in it. Paris has since appeared in an
episode of Supernatural in 2009. I don't think their meeting influenced her casting (who knows though), but may have affected her decision to accept the role. Then behind the scenes we have the writers and the director. The two writers for this remake, Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes, both have screenplay credits for The Reaping (2007) and Whiteout (2009). The director Jaume Collet-Serra has only otherwise directed Orphan (2009) for horror genre work. That about does it. I probably shouldn't admit but the original movie is still on my rent or pay to stream list, so I can't comment on the differences, but I can imagine they are extremely different movies.
