October 31, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #13 Trick 'r Treat (2007)
It's Hallowe'en! It's the thirteenth and final night, and movie. Not every year gets to have a specifically Hallowe'en themed movie for this auspicious night. Trick 'r Treat (2007) tells four stories that twist and turn amongst each other. They come together into a delicious gooey mass of holiday shenanigans. First up for acting staff is Dylan Baker as Steven. Dylan was in The Cell (2000), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Quinn Lord does double duty as Sam and Peeping Tommy. October 30, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #12 The House of the Devil (2009)
The House of the Devil (2009) had to be tonight's movie. It is everything that this year's list was about. It's also great to boot. Samantha is in college and getting her first apartment. Jocelin Donahue stars as Samantha, and she was in The Burrowers (2008). Greta Gerwig plays her friend Megan, but has no pertinent credits. Heather Robb was cast as her roommate and she was in Stake Land (2010).
Samantha goes to the job posted by Mr. Ulman played by Tom Noonan. October 29, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #11 The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
The Midnight Meat Train (2008) is a good follow up to the movie from last night. If that one gave you trouble you may want to give this one a pass, but this one is heavier on blood, less on screaming, and death comes swifter. The title is extremely indicative of what the movie is about. A photographer named Leon sets out to take better pictures for a prospective employer and stumbles onto a string of disappearances. He's seen the killer but needs to prove it and that only proves to be trouble...
Bradley Cooper plays Leon and can also be seen in Case 39 (2009). Leslie Bibb plays Leon's girlfriend Maya. Leslie has been in The Skulls (2000), and Trick 'r Treat (2007). October 23, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #5 Session 9 (2001)
Session 9 (2001) is one of those really creepy movies that will make you glad your job doesn't take you to places like that, or dread your job even more if you do. A hazardous material removal crew takes on the project of removing asbestos from a massive closed and decaying mental institute. Immediately something isn't right but they need the work. From there it can only get worse. The team is lead by Gordon played by Peter Mullan. Peter is set to be in some kind of mini-series called The Fear 2012 (TV). David Caruso plays Gordon's right hand man Phil. The one credit of David's I wanted to mention is that he was in First Blood (1982), the original Rambo movie.
Other crewmembers of note are played by Stephen Gevedon, who was in the War of the Worlds (2005) remake, and recently in Hellbenders (2012). Josh Lucas was in Thinner (1996), and Stealth (2005). Larry Fessenden gets around and was in Mulberry Street (2006), I Sell the Dead (2008), Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009), and Stake Land (2010). Larry also directed Wendigo (2001), an episode of Fear Itself (2008) (TV), and the upcoming movie Beneath (2013). Also of note in the cast is Paul Guilfoyle playing the man that hires the crew. Paul was in Howard the Duck (1986), and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988).
Session 9's director, Brad Anderson, also directed an episode of Surface (2005) (TV). Brad wrote and directed an episode for Masters of Horror (2005) (TV), and was a producer on and directed some episodes of Fringe (2008) (TV). Brad Anderson and actor Stephen Gevedon wrote Session 9. I want to end by saying just how amazing the mental institute location is, both inside and out. It is really a sight to behold. You're going to love this one, unless you hate Caruso, then you'll hate it because he's extremely Caruso-ey throughout.

The lead character Sarah is played by Shauna Macdonald. Juno, played by Natalie Mendoza, set up the adventure. Saskia Mulder played the safety minded Rebecca. Then there is Beth played by Alex Reid. Alex can be also seen in Arachnid (2001), and Guinea Pigs (2012). The soon to be doctor, Sam, is played by MyAnna Buring, previously seen in Grindhouse (2007). Rounding out the adventurers is Holly played by Nora-Jane Noone from The Day of the Triffids (2009) (TV) mini-series. All six women return again for The Descent: Part 2 (2009).
Just to spoiler the movie a little, the women run across vicious subhuman monsters referred to in the credits as Crawlers. There are several of them listed, but only two have horror credits to mention. The first one is the Crawler nicknamed Scar played by Craig Conway. Craig was in Dog Soldiers (2002). The second credited Crawler is played by Leslie Simpson who was also in Dog Soldiers. The reason for this is because The Descent was directed and screenwritten by Neil Marshall. Neil also wrote and directed Dog Soldiers.
October 21, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #3 The Last Exorcism (2010)
The Last Exorcism is about a reverend with a long history of exorcisms that were all fakery to convince the victims to be well again. News of deaths in other people's exorcisms makes him decide to do one more exorcism with a film crew and expose all of the fraud involved. This time he gets more than he bargained for.
Patrick Fabian stars as Reverend Cotton Marcus. Patrick has done work on Millennium (1997) (TV), Xena: Warrior Princess (1998) (TV), and FreakyLinks (2000) (TV). Ashley Bell plays the possessed girl, Nell Sweetzer, and she will be back for some amount of screen time in The Last Exorcism 2 (2013). Iris Bahr plays Cotton's sound person and she was in The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007). Adam Grimes plays Cotton's cameraman and appeared in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1996) (TV).
Louis Herthum plays Nell's father. He was uncredited in the Stephen King movie The Mist (2007), appeared in an episode of True Blood (2008) (TV), and will also apparently be back for The Last Exorcism 2 with Ashley. Caleb Landry Jones plays Nell's brother and can be seen in X-Men: First Class (2011). Some other notable acting staff include Carol Sutton playing a shopkeeper during Cotton's random interviews and she has a credit for Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995), then there is a motorist played by Victoria Patenaude from The Dunwich Horror (2009) (TV movie).
The Last Exorcism's director Daniel Stamm has a forthcoming film called The Darkness (2013). Screenwriters Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland have no previous horror credits and nothing listed as in production or coming soon. Then lastly, it bears mentioning that Eli Roth was a producer for the film and his name garnered a lot of the movie's attention before anyone had seen it. I'll leave his varied credits for some other time since he writes, directs, and produces.
October 20, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #2 Never Cry Werewolf (2008)
Tonight's movie is a fun ride. Never Cry Werewolf will immediately be compared to the original Fright Night (1985) and with good reason. Personally I find Never Cry Werewolf to be superior and solves every issue I had with Fright Night. This movie stars Nina Dobrev as Loren. Nina can currently be seen on The Vampire Diaries (2009) (TV), and was previously in an episode of Eleventh Hour (2009) (TV). Loren's new neighbour, and the titular werewolf, is played by Peter Stebbings who also happened to be in an episode of Eleventh Hour. Melanie Leishman plays Loren's best friend. Melanie was recently in Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (2010) (TV) and has second billing in the upcoming movie Stage Fright (2013), which also boasts parts for Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf.
When things get rough Loren tries to turn to TV hunter and games-man Redd Tucker played by Kevin Sorbo. Kevin of course was star of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995) (TV), which was preceded by a number of Hercules movies. He also made appearances as Hercules in Xena: Warrior Princess (1995) (TV), and starred in the sci-fi show Andromeda (2000) (TV). Von Flores makes an appearance as Detective Stalling. Von is a familiar TV face with credits such as an episode of War of the Worlds (1988) (TV), two episodes of Friday the 13th (1988) (TV), and he was a regular on Earth: Final Conflict (1997) (TV). Von also appeared in Darkman III: Die Darkman Die (1996). Also from an episode of Earth: Final Conflict is Kelly Fiddick as a clerk, presumably in the sports store. Then finally to round out the acting staff of mention is Billy Otis as a pedophile killed by the werewolf for his skin. Billy of course was in Saw IV (2007) and Saw VI (2009).
Never Cry Werewolf's director, Brenton Spencer, has done directorial work on TV in The Crow: Stairway to Heaven (1999) (TV), Poltergeist: The Legacy (1996) (TV), Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo, and likely with Von Flores in Earth: Final Conflict. Never Cry Werewolf's writer John Sheppard was also the screenwriter for Ripper 2: Letter from Within (2004). I hope you get as much of a kick out of this one as I do.
October 19, 2012 13 Nights of Hallowe'en 2012: Night #1 The Return (2006)
Hello and welcome to the first night of this year's 13 Nights of Hallowe'en! This year I have chosen a more accessible list of movies suitable for even the horror newcomers. I thought that I would start off with the supernatural thriller The Return. This movie was billed and advertised as something much stronger in the scares department than it is. It would have stood out on its own merit if they had let it. The movie is about a woman who returns for a sales presentation to her home state of Texas after staying away for a long time. Her life almost immediately takes a turn for the strange as memories come flooding back and spill over into the present.
The film's director Asif Kapadia has no other pertinent credits for our discussions. Adam Sussman is the screenwriter. He also wrote for the Night Stalker (TV series) (2005), specifically the episode "Three", and served as writing editor on other episodes of that series. The film stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Joanna Mills. Sarah Michelle of course is famous for the title role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) (1996). She was also in the following: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), Scream 2 (1997), Angel (1999) (TV), Cruel Intentions (1999), Scooby-Doo (Movie) (2002), Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), The Grudge (2004), The Grudge 2 (2006), TMNT (2007) (movie), and Possession (2008). Kate Beahan plays Joanna's Texas friend. You might remember Kate from Lost Souls (2000), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), and The Wicker Man (2006) remake.
Peter O'Brien plays Terry, the man who helps Joanna. He was in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King (2006) (TV Mini-Series) episode "The Fifth Quarter". Adam Scott plays Joanna's stalker co-worker and was previously in Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996), and Piranha (2010). Sam Shepard from Stealth (2005) plays Joanna's father. The last notable actor is Brad Leland as Joanna's boss. Brad is instantly recognisable and was in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) remake.
