American Pie
American Pie is the story of four friends who come to the conclusion
that they are getting nowhere in their final year of high-school and
that if they do not put more effort into it they will all enter college
as virgins. They make a pact that by the time Senior Prom night
is over they will have had sexual intercourse. To do this they
decide to pool their intellectual resources to overcome what has been
holding them back and to be supportive of each to encourage them to
focus on their goal.
American Pie is a coming of age story the likes that has been
touched upon again and again. However this one seems to hit the
nail directly on the head. Even though some of it is predictable
the writing/directing and the acting brings a reality to the same old
same old. The characterisation breaks through the formulaic
nature to give the audience the sense that this is predictable because
it is true. History repeats itself, people will always act the
same. It's the subtle portrayal that this is normal that pulls
the movie above most of the others of its type.
Eugene Levy is absolutely hilarious and keeps the jokes rolling with
his mere presence. He doesn't overshadow the others, or have as
much screen time but his scenes and the situations his character is
placed in seem to be the funniest. The movie is overall a good
mix of funny and dramatic. The cast is well suited to their parts
in typical Hollywood fashion, meaning that if the entire world from
nerds to beauties were perfect looking then these people would be
indicative of their roles.
The high-school setting and scenery stands out the most in this
film. The visual are par for the course with nothing
extraordinary. Nothing is out of place but nothing is spectacular
either. The musical score and soundtrack went mostly unnoticed
throughout the film. It's hard to say if this is because it is
lacking or if it is properly subtle. This of course is always a
good sign either because it does its job of being unobtrusive, or it
was felt the film could stand unaided by a score.
