Unbreakable - M. Night Shyamalan
Unbreakable is a new mythos film from M. Night Shyamalan creator of
the Sixth Sense. Again he has chosen Bruce Willis to play the
lead role. Regular guy David Dunn is on a train that derails
outside of Philadelphia and he is the only survivor out of 132
passengers. He does not even have a scratch on him. A
little later he is contacted by a strange man who deals in comic book
art who leads him on a strange path. The art dealer, a man named
Elijah Price, was born with a genetic defect that leaves his bones
brittle and easy to break. He suggests that David is someone who
is opposite to him, someone who can't be hurt. This of course
can't be, the real world is not a comic book. Still Elijah has
some questions with interesting answers.
This is a slow film that takes its time getting where it's going
and then picks up speed at the end. Unbreakable creates its own
unique world just a few small degrees off of normal. It has its
own reality and has to set up its own rules that will be followed
throughout. It's tightly constructed which makes it difficult to
describe without giving away too much. It's not boring but not
super exciting throughout most of it. It has a lot of vision,
some good acting, and a few thrills. There isn't really anything
derivative in it, which makes it unique in this day and age. It
should appeal to anyone who is willing to sit through a movie that
doesn't have minute after minute of eye candy, or lots of action.
It's a very good story and character driven film. A good effort
on the director's part but not up to the standard he set with his
previous film.
