The One
The One is a sci-fi action flick starring Jet Li as a man who is
killing all of his doubles in alternate dimensions so that he can gain
their power and become the only him. He has already killed 123
of them and only one remains. He has attained inhuman strength,
reflexes and speed and is nearly unstoppable, except that the other
remaining him is just as powerful. On his trail is a pair of
dimension spanning police who have the hardest job, bringing him in
alive. No one knows what will happen if he becomes the One.
He could become the most powerful being alive or the entire
multiverse could be destroyed.
The One is full of action from almost minute one, unfolds at a good
pace and has some decent characterisation. The special effects
are good and things are slowed down so that you can see what is going
on and there is no need to guess like in some other films of this
type. The acting is passable and the dialog is too. It's
not award winning material by any measure but it is a good action
flick with some nicely thought out fight scenes and some really good
out there sort of effects. There is some predictability, a
forgone conclusion when there are two of the same person running
around but otherwise it does not retread similar films, nor does it
make too big a deal out of mistaken identity stunts.
