The Others
The Others is about a woman who has two children with an affliction
that leaves them unable to be in sunlight, or other bright lights
without suffering severe harm. Their father went off to fight in
World War II and though the war is over he still has not returned.
So the mother and children live in seclusion in their large
estate house with all of the windows heavily curtained and very few
lights. During the occupation by German troops the house's
electricity was cut off frequently until the family became so used to
it that they simply never bothered to get it fixed at the end of the
war. One night the staff of the house just up and left in the
middle of the night not even taking their things with them. The
mother advertises for new staff and three people show up to take the
job. The people are quiet and unassuming. Soon after their
arrival things start going weird.
The Others, once one gets past the contrivance of light allergic
children as an excuse to keep everything dark and moody, is one of
those really good, dramatic and slowly unfolding horror movies.
It relies on suspense and good acting instead of special effects
and as such stands out as an exceptional horror. The acting in this
is very good and the set and locations, and such are very well done.
There is a lot of silence in this movie that is spoiled by the
general hum of the TV speakers when you turn it up to hear all of the
whispering that goes on in the film. This makes it distracting
but there is something about the film that just does not make up for
this fault like some other films do. All in all this is a good
horror, a better than average film, but I would not go so far as to
call it a new classic or compare it to any other film.
