The Mummy Returns (2001)
The Mummy Returns is the follow up to the big blockbuster film
starring Brendan Fraiser, Rachel Weisz, and Oded Fehr. It has
been ten years since Rick O'Connell did away with the mummy Imhotep
and saved the world. Rick married Evelyn Caenahan and they have
an eight year old son Alex. Rick and his family are off on an
expedition to try and find a new treasure item. What they find
is the bracelet of the thought to be mythical Scorpion King. It
is said that 5000 years after his death the Scorpion King whom sold
his soul to Anubis rises and with an army of demons will take over the
world. Of course that is only myth except now the bracelet proves
that the Scorpion King was real. It is said that whoever can
kill the Scorpion King can either send the demon army back to the
nether world, or use it for his own purposes. A group of people
find and raise Imhotep from the grave so that he can kill the Scorpion
King and be supreme ruler of the world. The race is on.
As far as sequels goes The Mummy Returns is pretty standard and not
as good as the first. Still on it's own this is a good adventure
movie with lots of action, several twists and turns, and some really
nice battles. It is not comparable either to the mother of all
adventure movies Raiders of the Lost Ark, but that would be an unfair
comparison any way. The acting is pretty par for the course and
there's some good humour in the film, but the horror oomph is kind of
lacking. There isn't a lot of intrigue and much of the film's action
is left to stand on its own without any real build up of tension, or
sense of urgency despite the importance of the events portrayed.
However, otherwise the musical score is very good and adds a lot
of that early twentieth century and Egyptian feel to the film, and the
sets and locations are nice to look at if not too special.
