The Mothman Prophecies
The Mothman Prophecies is based upon the true story of strange goings
on in a small town in West Virginia. Reporter John Klein and his
wife leave from laying down the first steps to buying their new dream
home. On the road they have an accident and his wife is injured.
She saw something and it hit the car. The event is totally
surreal and she doesn't mention it, especially in light of the fact
that a scan of her brain shows a cancerous tumour. She dies and
two years later on his way to an interview in another state John finds
himself in a town called Point Pleasant except he doesn't know how he
got there, and it is much father than he could possibly have travelled in
the time he was on the road. Strange things are going on in the
town including strange creatures being sighted and mysterious voices
on the phone and from dark dank places.
The Mothman Prophecies is probably one of the very few "real" horror movies to
come out in the past couple of years. It does not rely on
expensive and overused special effects, or bizarre settings and camera
distortions, or any of the other blatant tools that have blundered
through other "blockbuster" horrors. Instead it relies on mood,
plotting, and acting to bring all of the suspense, apprehension, and
fear to the audience which it does quite admirably. It is not
the greatest horror ever to be witnessed but it is a welcomed breath
of fresh and familiar air. It is horror, not thriller, not
slasher, not teen this or that, just a nicely constructed well thought
out horror movie. For those looking for splatter, gore, and monsters
galore look elsewhere, for those looking for something to sink into
and feel the tension, this is your film.
