Memento
A man's wife is raped and murdered and he suffers a great head
trauma that leaves him incapable of making new memories. He knows
who he is, everything about his life, and his beloved wife but only up
to the point when he was injured. He now lives in a world where
everything is forgotten mere minutes or less as soon as he is
distracted or he nods off to sleep. Still he pursues the man
that did this to him and took away his wife. He is haunted by
her death because it is always the last thing he remembers; it
is a sore that will never go away. Armed with an array of notes,
a Polaroid camera and a growing number of tattoos of the most important
information he continues to track his quarry.
Memento is a complicated non-linear movie where things happen out
of order moving backward in time and forward in the plot while other
threads swirl their way around seemingly at random until everything
pulls together and it all makes sense. This is one of those high
art movies but doesn't come across as pretentious or otherwise full of
itself. The acting is excellent and the plotting is amazing,
filled as it is with tension, suspense, excitement, and intrigue galore
as you follow along in the shoes of a man who must suspect everyone
yet know who to trust and how far. This is one of those amazing
films that will leave a mark on the viewer and instil a great sense of
appreciation for the joy it is to remember everything, this film
included.
