Lost in Space
The Robinson family has volunteered to travel to a new planet called
Alpha Prime that is chosen for colonisation. The planet is ten
years away with current space drive technology. The Robinson's
mission is to build a space gate in orbit around the new planet.
The two gates will allow for faster than light travel between
them and humanity will be saved from dwindling resources. Other
factions on Earth want to see the project fail and they use a mole
within the government to try and sabotage the Robinson's ship the
Jupiter 2. From there the movie continues in its own direction.
This 1998 adaptation of Lost in Space is a modern effect driven
retelling of the opening story for the old 1965 T.V. series. Gone
is the comedy, the kitsch, and the camp of the original replaced with
slick mechanical effects, computer graphics, and full-fledge dramatic
characters. The film has good action, good pacing, and the right
dashes of character and plot and is a good sci-fi romp. There are
some plot hooks that can be used in sequels if the film becomes a
franchise and that it is without considering the obvious hook at the
end.
The visuals are excellent, the musical score is good and the acting
is passable to just shy of truly moving. The story is updated
without being too showy in that regard. Some good thought was put
into the story line and the film runs a good emotional gambit through
the depths and non-stereotyping of the characters. For the
nitpicker there are some flaws that they can sink their teeth in but
nothing so drastic as to detract from the movie being fun and
entertaining.
