Hearts in Atlantis
Hearts in Atlantis, based upon a story by Stephen King is about a
mysterious but friendly man who moves into the upstairs of a house
owned by a single mother and her 11 year old boy. The boy's
mother works hard to pay off the debts left to her by her deceased
husband and as such ends up working a lot of overtime and messing with
the boy's life in the process. He takes an instant liking to the
man who's renting the upstairs and they embark on a relationship of
camaraderie, and some commerce. The boy desperately wants, as
all boys do, to have a really cool bicycle and the older man pays him
to read the newspapers to him and keep an eye out for strange
happenings and what he calls "low men". The man has a secret and
means to keep it. The boy simply takes it in stride for the money
until they become close friends then he too is drawn into the
conspiracy.
Hearts in Atlantis is absolutely excellent. The locations are
gorgeous, the 1960's sets beautifully realised, and the acting superb.
The film is exciting, poignant, and well written. The
lyrical soundtrack is all great hits from the time, and the musical
score is superbly crafted. This is the kind of movie that
reviewers live for, a film that is just so gripping in all aspects
from direction, to setting, to dialogue, to music, to soups and nuts.
