Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (TV Version)

This is the sixth film in the Halloween franchise.  This review is for the TV version, which seems to be slightly different than the theatrical release including not only the normal cut down of violence but also adding some extended scenes.  As far as the film series goes The Curse of Michael Myers both fits into the overall story but also differentiates itself.  Michael is still trying to catch up to and kill his cousin Jamie Lloyd.  Six years have passed since the events of the fifth film and Jamie is about to have a baby.  However all is not joyous as some sort of cult is holding her hostage and want her baby as part of some ritual.  She escapes with a bit of help and now must find a way to save her baby for surely if Michael must kill her me must also kill the baby.  She is not the only one in trouble though, some of the Strodes family (relations to Laurie, Michael's sister) are living in the old Myers house.

The Curse of Michael Myers is the first of the films to actually offer an explanation of what the killings are all about.  It tells what drives Michael to the lengths he goes to, what makes him need to murder each and every one of his close relatives.  As such this film has some extensive dialogue scenes that are integral to the plot instead of just mood establishment.  This makes the film more story driven as well as ultimately taking away a lot of the suspense and tension from the film.  Given all of this the dialogue is not bad but it is nothing stellar.  The pace is a little slow in parts.

The directing varies from scene to scene and is less than stellar due to the way the movie was filmed, then chopped apart, and then parts of it re-filmed because of disagreements between the creative staff and the studio.  Since this is one of the Halloween films we almost "have to" compare the musical score to the original and it pales significantly in comparison however even standing on it's own this score was sub-par.  There are many likeable parts to this film and the story is good, but the acting could have been better, particularly the actor playing Michael who just wasn't menacing enough and comes across as just a wanna-be Shape.
