The Devonsville Terror
During a witch hunt three women are executed.
The third places a curse that in three hundred years her
revenge will be extracted on the progeny of the men responsible.
Three hundred years pass and three women seperately arrive in
the town and face the ignorance of the small town's people who
do not seem to have learned anything from the past, nor grown any
into the modern world. They own televisions, and drive cars,
but beyond this veneer they are still backwards and superstitous.
Donald Pleasence is Dr. Warley the town physician who knows
that curses are real. Suzanna Love is a teacher who finds out
just how much Devonsville hasn't changed when she arrives and
becomes singled out as a harbinger of the curse. Will history
repeat itself or is Dr. Warley living proof that justice will be
met?
The Devonsville Terror. What can I say? Witches. Were
they real? How were they treated? This film delves
lightly into these topics in the opening moments of the film.
For itself it answers yes at least one or two were real.
It also answers they were treated beyond horrendously.
We have two very interesting executions, and one standard text
book execution of burning at the stake. The first execution
style I am aware of, but the second and the most disturbing to see
was a completely new one to me. Yes it's the wagon wheel (in
case I have them out of order of appearance).
The exterior locations and natural lighting in The Devonswille Terror
are to die for. This film screams "rural New England state
horror". The plot is a little rough in spots, and it lacks in
long standing horror but makes up for it with dementedness.
This one knows sick and twisted but don't expect it from the
special effects, or the witches; expect it from the townspeople and
the real people they are inspired by.
Donald Pleasence does have good taste in horror beyond taking
on his role in the Halloween franchise. His part is complex
with a backstory that must be complicated, or entirely bogus.
His relationship as town Doctor drives the plot forward as
he plays his instrumental role in fulfilling the chilling prophecy.
The only other name in the film is Suzanna Love who plays
a new teacher moving into the area who becomes embroiled in the
plot, and is actually the star of the film.
