Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead is about an ex-Mafia man
named Jimmy the Saint who steps back into the life to take on one last
job. He pulls together four other guys to do the job, a simple
snatch, frighten, and return. Jimmy lets the crazy man of the
group convince him that he can handle being part of the initial grab
and will not live up to his old reputation of leaving all his victims
in critical condition. The job goes terribly wrong and despite
Jimmy's efforts to take all of the blame the five men end up marked for
death. Now Jimmy has to clear up some business and clear his
conscience by getting the others out of town and harms way.
This is as quirky a film as the title would indicate. It is
strongly directed with a flair and style of its own. It's slick
and well executed but still lacks a certain excitement. While it
doesn't plod along it could have had a more engaging plot. The
characters are believable and mostly likeable. Andy Garcia comes
across as an excellent actor stepping fully into the role and making it
his own, in a good way. Christopher Walken is as electric and
passively as creepy as ever lending a great menace to a character that
otherwise might not have been so threatening.
There were some nice exteriors and weather and lighting conditions
but the interiors were only average and the setting of the malt shop
seemed a little too changeable. The movie had a good soundtrack
that was apparent but not intrusive. The violence seemed a little
flat but was intended that way, the view tainted by the professionalism
of the target criminals, and the general blasé quality that has sunk
into these men.
