The Boogey Man (1980)
Lacy and Willy stand on the porch of their home watching their
mother fool around with her new boyfriend. She catches them and
her boyfriend ties Willy down to his bed. Lacy gets a knife from
the kitchen to cut her brother loose. Then she follows him into
their mother's bedroom and watches in the mirror on the wall as he
stabs the boyfriend to death. Twenty years later Willy is silent
never having spoken a word since the murder and Lacy is plagued by
nightmares. They receive a letter from their mother saying she
wants to see them because she hasn't long to live. Things get
worse and Lacy and her husband go back to the house where it happened
at the insistence of Lacy's psychiatrist. There, though
everything else is different, she finds the mirror and breaks it and a
great horror is released.
This is another film from director Ulli Lommel starring Suzanna
Love both of whom where involved with The Devonsville Terror, which I
highly recommend. Again we have really nice exterior locations
and sets although these seriously pale in comparison to the other film.
The musical score is rather middling and very influenced by the
year of its release making it quite dated in a bad way. The plot
is above passable but paced well. The acting is fine though it
could have been directed a little better. The Boogey Man is a
fair horror movie and has at least one innovative kill scene.
DVD NOTES: I bought the film paired with The
Devonsville Terror on the same disc. The sound is stereo but not
surround. There is little any directionality. The video transfer
is good with only two or three film problems that would also be evident
in the source materials. The colours are good even the dark
scenes. Nice solid blacks. It is presented in letterboxed
format.
