Blade

Blade is an adaptation of a character from the Marvel line of comic books.  Blade is a man who is genetically part vampire because his mother was bitten prior to his birth.  He is known to the vampire world as the Day Walker because he does not need to shun the sun.  He also is immune to the effect of garlic and contact with silver.  Blade and his partner Whistler a man who is most at home in his workshop building vampire slaying weapons follow a concentration of high ranking vampires killing their minions and flunkies and trying to draw higher and higher up the chain.

Blade is an action flick through and through rocking and rolling from one exciting scene to the next with proper amounts of story revelation and basic character building.  There is a certain flair added to most of the scenes elevating things from the usual head bashing and shooting up things to something with a little style.  There is something of a horrific thread through the movie as well with the way some things are twisted.  It has some dark flourishes to it even though horror is not the focus of the film.  The film is very immersive drawing the audience in.  Wesley Snipes is a good fit for the role of Blade and steps into it well giving him a proper sense of menace and tiredness of the endless evil of the world he is caught up in.

There are some nice interior locations, the exteriors are indicative of the story but nothing extremely special.  The acting is good, there is little stereotyping and the film avoids preachy glorification of the vampire archetype, or turning them into mindless, tasteless fodder.  Blade has a strong musical score that does not overpower and is not entirely beneath notice, again it fits but is not spectacular.  Still overall this is strong piece of filmmaking and an enjoyable diversion.
