Along Came a Spider
Along Came a Spider is a sort of sequel to "Kiss the Girls".
Morgan Freeman is police Detective Alex Cross and this time he
is pulled into a kidnapping case. A teacher has kidnapped a
congressman's daughter right out from under the nose of her Secret
Service protector. The kidnapper wants Alex involved in the case
and sets a series of clues out to string him along and keep him
involved. Alex enlists the aid of the failed Secret Service agent
so that she can redeem herself. Alex knows all too well how the
guilt of failing someone can really gnaw at a person. He is still
getting over the loss of a partner as he begins to work with the agent.
Following in the footsteps of an already well established film
automatically opens up comparisons between "Along Came a Spider" and
"Kiss the Girls". In this respect Along Came a Spider does not
measure up. Along Came a Spider has a plot with a fair bit of
twisting and turning and certainly some big surprises, but a lot of it
seems borrowed from other movies. The real problem is that the
film does not transcend or rise above those parts. Either the
acting or the directing is off because plot aside the story is still
pretty emotionally flat. There isn't a lot of explanation as to
what goes on either and it makes it feel as is if something is missing.
In the beginning of the film there is an incredible special
effects scene. Afterward there isn't much in the way of effects.
It seems like some kind of tease. The film has quite good
interior sets. The exterior locations are pretty average though
they have fair enough atmospheric conditions. The musical score
was fairly efficient at its work. The lyrical soundtrack was
uncommentable if there even was one. Along Came a Spider is
something of a disappointment.
