Thir13en Ghosts
Thir13en Ghosts is a remake of a 1960 film of the same name. Arthur Kriticos widower and father of two inherits a house from a recently deceased uncle that he barely knew. His Uncle Cyrus Kriticos was an eccentric who was said to have squandered the family fortune. Unknown to Arthur, Cyrus was a ghost hunter and he captured them as trophies. Ghosts normally cannot be seen although the more powerful ones can affect the world around them. Cyrus had special glasses with which ghosts can be seen and used giant glass cubes with strange incantations written on them to capture the restless spirits. When he had captured enough of them he built their cages into the basement of the bizarre house of glass he had built as a monument to his ego. Arthur, the kids, and their nanny go to the house. Cyrus' lawyer triggers something and they all become trapped inside and the ghosts get loose.
This movie has an elaborate set in the form of the house of glass. The walls are covered in some sort of incantations written in Latin and there is odd machinery all over the place that allows the house to rearrange itself. The ghosts are all super-detailed with gore a-plenty and plenty of attitude. They range from the disturbing to the overwrought and some get a fair bit of screen time to show off the quality of the makeup effects. Said effects are very good for the most part although a couple of the early scenes with the "Angry Princess" show one clearly visible flaw. The film relies on the setting and the costumed ghosts to carry the scares and in some places is good and in other simply mediocre. There is too little contrast away from the horrific content and it becomes slightly hard to not become jaded. Still it is a good horror movie and well worth the time and money.
