General Glossary of Terms

  • Genre: A genre is a descriptive category that a work (book, cd, movie, etc) may be placed under.  It is an easy way with which to describe a work for the benefit of telling another person about it.

  • Anime: Anime is the Japanese name for animated features.  Some refer to it as Japanimation but this is generally a subdivision based up the Americanising of the original scripts and liberal translations of the dialog.

  • Manga: Manga is the Japanese word for their graphic novels, or comic books.  Japan has declared manga a national artform and they treat it as such.

  • RPG: RPG stands for Role Playing Game.  RPGs are books which describe a game and the setting where the characters made by the players will be.  RPGs are games of let's pretend with sets of rules to avoid conflict between players.
