The Wells of Hell - Graham Masterton
The Wells of Hell is another of the early novels by horror author
extraordinaire Graham Masterton who also penned "Spirit", and
"House that Jack Built". Something ancient and forgotten lurks
in the bowels of the earth for centuries waiting for the time to
raise to the earth above. Only one man can stop the approaching
horror but first he must understand what is going on in his small
town. Good friends of his have gone missing and their house
is full of water. This same water is not quite right and does
strange things to the local wildlife. The local history books
tell of odd times but nothing compared to what he is facing now.
The answer is somewhere though if only he is brave enough to
pursue it.
This is pretty average for a Graham Masterton novel but that still
places it head and shoulders above many other author's works.
There is a real sense about the places and the people in the
book. The mystery unfolds itself nicely, there are lots of thrills
and chills, and it carries itself well. There is a real humanity
to the lead character and that really works on the audience to heighten
the terrible things he witnesses. The pacing is a little slow in
parts but generally in a required fashion such as letting the reader
see and understand what is going on as the characters discover it, or
to give the reader a breather before the next bit of terror.
Wells of Hell is a good read if you can find it but unfortunately
it is out of print.
