Stir of Echoes - Richard Matheson

Stir of Echoes is written by horror legend Richard Matheson who
has also written "I am Legend", "Hell House", "What Dreams May Come"
and many more highly acclaimed novels.  His works have influenced
many other great writers and film makers.  Stir of Echoes is about
a man named Tom Wallace who is thrust into the nightmarish world of
unbelievable and uncontrollable psychic phenomena.  As Tom
struggles with flashes of what other people are thinking and feeling
his world crumbles around him and his own sanity comes into question.
The worst is yet to come though, someone is trying to reach him,
someone who may be reaching out from beyond the grave.  Tom must
do something, and fast, because the strain of it is killing him.

Stir of Echoes is a well written thrill ride that is virtually
timeless.  It could take place any time from the 1920s to the
present day, and beyond.  Stripped of the few setting details that
carry over to the plot the novel could take place literally anytime.
It is this spectacular quality that many strive for but so few
manage.  Beyond that the novel has great depth.  The
characters are rich and vibrant.  The pace builds and builds until
the climax almost literally explodes striking raw flayed nerve.
The setting details are at once sketchy and evocative.  The
dialogue is pitch perfect.  If there is any flaw to this novel it
is that it is too short and though thoroughly satisfying definitely
leaves the reader wanting more.
