Robotech - Mark McKinney
Robotech is a novelization of the television series of the same name.
Robotech is a conglomeration of three Japanese anime series, Super Dimensional
Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis
Climber Mospaeda. The novels by Mark McKinney cover the entirety
of Robotech and adds in a few stories from large gaps within the series
and culminating in a novel that conclusively ties together the original
three series.
This novelization is a great adaptation and maintains with a high degree the feel
of the story and the characters. From the very start to the conclusion,
that many people don't even know they miss, Robotech is a series that you will
find difficult to put down. The additional material fits in perfectly
with the original story and is extremely satisfying. This material fills in
several gaps that lead to a little confusion of such things as character
motivation.
One of the more interesting elements to these novels is the use of differing
perspectives between the humans and the aliens. Such things included
techno-jargon, world (or perhaps universe) views, and physical,
technical, and moral concepts.
The Robotech series of books is twenty-one slim novels long. My suggestion
is that the books be read in the order they were published (and also the
way that they are numbered, keeping in mind that the five books of the
"Sentinels" saga come between books twelve and eighteen, with the eighteenth
being "The End of the Circle"). The reason I suggest this is because
some things are better left not understood until after the fact.
This series is a must read if you can find it.
