Prey - Graham Masterton
Prey is one of my favourite novels by horror author
extraordinaire Graham Masterton who also penned "Pariah", "Death
Dream", and the Manitou novels amongst his career of over 70
books to date. Prey is a Lovecraftian inspired tale about
David Williams who moves into a large house on the Isle of Wight
to renovate it. He meets a lovely young woman and becomes
involved with her. However as idyllic as everything seems
there is something not right about the house. The angles
seem to be off and time does not act like it should within the
house. Worse yet, something part man and part rat is
skulking around. David could ignore it, but he has his son
staying with him in the house.
Prey is an excellent paced, gripping, horror joy ride.
The characterisation is brilliant, the plotting top notch,
and the settings vibrant. The elements borrowed from Lovecraft
are excellently woven into the story and fit perfectly with the
rest of the narrative. The tone of the novel is pitch perfect,
and the voice is strong. There is nothing out of place in
this novel. I placed it as my fourth favourite horror
book. The only reason it did not rank higher was because I
did not love the story as much as the books in the top three
spots. It was just a matter of personal taste and nothing to
do with the novel's quality.
