Cold Fire - Dean Koontz
Jim Ironheart is a hero, though he would rather not be.
For some reason Jim is drawn to danger by an outside force.
An idea will pop into his head and he must act upon it. It
takes him even across the country. When it is over and done he
has saved peoples lives. It's something more frightening than it
is encouraging to Jim. He's not some kind of super-hero, he's
just a man who couldn't stop it even if he wanted. Reporter Holly
Thorne is witness to one of Jim's rescues and can't resist following it
up. Jim's quests are not only dangerous but they show a very
violent source within him. Holly may get more than she bargained
for as she tries to unravel the mystery.
Cold Fire is a pusle pounding often action packed thrill ride.
It is one of Dean's memorable Southern California books painted
with heavy but deft strokes. His attention to detail and sheer
descriptiveness makes the settings--wherever they are, even out of
SoCal--vibrant and strongly present within the mind's eye as the story
unfolds. The characters of Jim and Holly are well thought out and
delved into pretty deeply. The plot is fairly fast moving in the
beginning, but winds down in the latter part of the book. The
tension and the supsense on the other hand carry throughout right to
the end. The pacing of the action scenes is excellent and the
violence vivid and stimulating.
