Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller about fandom and the descent into madness.  Japanese pop star Mimarin Kirigoe is setting down her hand microphone and picking up a script.  She leaves her band Cham for the bright lights of the television sound stage.  The decision is a tough one, but she believes her decision is the right one.  Her managers are split on the decision personally but they forge forward in trying to expand upon her part in a hit TV series.  Mima's fans are unhappy about the choice, but most of them are going along with it as well, except for one.  Even as she becomes aware of being stalked Mima has a

worse problem.  The things she must do to change from pop star to actress are nothing like she expected and its tearing her up inside.  In fact she seems to be going mad over the stress.

Perfect Blue is taut, totally fraught with tension that builds and builds.  The film is graphically violent, twisted beyond belief, and absolutely disturbing.  It's amazing.  The voice acting is top notch, the direction spectacular, and the story mind blowing.  As far as anime goes this is the real deal.  Deep and detailed characterisation, fantastic visuals, a gripping story for the emotionally and mentally mature, and the perfect lyrical soundtrack and musical score.  The audience can walk away with everything they need to understand the surface but multiple viewings provide deeper insights nearly every time.  The story has many layers and also mysteries.  A lot more is going on than meets the eye at first, which makes this a perfect movie to own.

DVD Notes

The Perfect Blue DVD has a lot of extras including Interviews, the original Theatrical Trailer, Musical Photo Gallery, Behind-the-Scenes Performances, Bonus Audio Track, Previews for other anime, and additional DVD-ROM based goodies.  The movie is available dubbed in English or with English subtitles to go along with the original Japanese audio.  Most but thankfully not all of the extras are in English.  The English dub is not bad for the viewer who has not seen the subbed version, but it is not the best of quality.   The video on this disc is spectacular with solid colours even on the dark scenes.  The audio is of excellent quality as well.  This is a great DVD that will provide a good lengthy time watching everything through, then playing with things on the computer afterward as well.
