I recently started setting up a bunch of new websites for myself. First order of business for doing that was to buy the domain names. Second though was putting together banners or logos. I've talked here before about text art, and logo making is very similar up to a point. The advantage of the text art I was making was that it did not have to fit into a larger visual framework--though there were thematic concerns. Now with the website logos and art I have to consider other elements on the page. There are different levels at which this takes place. Thematic coherence is there of course--both visually and following a narrative flow. Colour choices are an issue that affects mood, and readability--light text on dark backgrounds is problematic viewing for any length of time for many of us. Like before the choice of font affects everything colour does. It all just has to tie together.
The current issue I am dealing with in creating the last few logos and sites is in having the logo be more than just an image stuck in the middle at the top of the page. Some logos can do that, others require more. I find it hard to blend the images into the surrounding background if it's not an obvious or invisible transition. There aren't a lot of options open to me with the tools I have. I do not know if it is the fault of the programs or with my use of them. There are some problems such as dropping the number of colours to make use of transparencies. Take for instance the original set up for Umbral Intentions™ compared to what it is now at www.umbralintentions.com. This of course is just a brief holding or landing page. I have yet to get to the full site. That will require more thought and work on the ideas presented above, and then some.
