Battlefield Earth
Battlefield Earth is the movie adaptation by the book of the same
name by L. Ron Hubbard. For 1000 years man has been enslaved by
aliens from far across the Galaxy. Now one man from an enclave
of people hiding from the alien menace in a radiated hot spot is going
to change the future and save humanity, he just doesn't know it yet.
As the saying goes you can't keep a good man down. The
aliens just don't know whom they are messing with even though he shows
them the war was only on hiatus. Sure the first war only lasted
nine minutes but this time it will be different.
This may get me hung in some circles, but I enjoyed this movie.
It has a big budget that it put to use in a mix of elaborate
sets, mixed sized visuals, and flying machines and high tech weapons
fire. The story has one major flaw in it, and that is the
alien's lack of history to know that even though they are comparatively
primitive technology-wise the humans are not stupid. It is
probably meant to be a comment of some sort but it just makes much of
the action of the film predictable. However there are enough
options for the human take-over to proceed that the film keeps from
being boring.
The dialog and the acting is over the top, trite, and occasionally
conceited yet it seems to fit perfectly. The movie is like a big
budget B-movie in that respect. It's definitely not haute
couture, or maybe even cinema, but it is a good flick. I have no
idea whatsoever if it follows the book at all, or to what degree, but
it wasn't required reading material to understand the film.
Guessing from responses elsewhere its probably best not to have
read the book before seeing the movie.
